As a naturalised British citizen, I cherished the national history that pervades Westminster Abbey.
Westminster Abbey exudes an air of royalty: besides being the setting of the Royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, it is the coronation church and the place of burial of several monarchs.
We will start with an introduction in the cloisters, and enter the Abbey to see the coronation chair. We will then visit the burials of some famous British nationals, and learn what happens during a coronation ceremony. After that, we will untangle the intrigues of XVI-century history while introducing the tombs of Bloody Mary and Elizabeth I. Finally, we will be blessed by the architectural splendour of Henry VII’s chapel, and by the spirit of the writers that rest in Poets’ Corner. Our tour will finish where the history of Westminster Abbey began: at the only remaining part of the building dating back to the times of Edward the Confessor. Who can get married at Westminster Abbey? Who attended the rehearsal of her own funeral? We will learn all of this and more.
Westminster Abbey charges an admission fee. We will buy tickets together on the day (at your own cost; the guide enters for free). Please do not pre-book your tickets, as they may not be valid.
