Small streets, a flee market, antique shops, urban gardening, street art, old style housing estates, a culinary market hall, a multi-ethnical flair, and bars that offer tapas from throughout the world – all this is the trendy quarter of Lavapies.
This favorite district in the southern part of the center of Madrid becomes more and more popular. For a long time, it was supposed to be the former Jewish quarter. Today historians are more inclined to situate the old Jewish district close to the Royal Palace. However, the charming and popular neighborhood of Lavapies, with its multi-ethnical inhabitants originating from many nations, is worth to be visited.
We start at the popular Cascorro Square and enjoy interesting antique and leather shops and streets with old shopping galleries. We will also get to see a wide range of Street art by very talented and some well-known artists. We can have a tapa stop in the market hall Mercado San Fernando.
We see a corrala, once a common housing estate of ordinary people which did not allow much intimacy. We will enter the small oasis of an urban garden run by the citizens of the area. Here you can enjoy the tiny shops where the food ingredients of the most assorted international dishes can be found. Get to know this trendy quarter!
