Petropolis, A. K. A., the Imperial City, holds a mixture of history and nature uniquely. Its proximity to Rio de Janeiro turned Petropolis into the leading destination for the royal court during summer days, in 1822. Petropolis then became the central city of Rio's mountain region in the 19th century.
It is one hour drive through the Serra dos Orgãos National Park first. Then we will visit the Imperial Museum built by Peter II and have lunch before returning to Rio.
You will get to visit the Quitandinha Palace, built in 1944 by Joaquim Rolla to be the largest hotel-casino in Latin America. Its architectural style is the Hollywood rococo (internally) and Norman-French (externally) - very present in architecture due to Petropolis German colonization.
You will also get to see the Neogothic Cathedral of Saint Peter de Alcantara where the mortals of the Brazilian imperial family rests, and the Imperial Museum in Petropolis, the summer residence of the Imperial family.
We will have lunch at the Alcobaça Inn, one of the most charming places in the mountains of the Rio region. A house built in 1914, surrounded by rose gardens, bromeliads, orchids and fragrant herbs.
