The Vigeland Park consists of more than 200 sculptures made by one man. It is a "must see" in Oslo. Not only did Gustav Vigeland make the models for all the statues in the park, but he also created the layout of the park.
For a deeper understanding of the man and his art, the tour can be extended to the nearby Vigeland Museum.
Understanding Vigeland is a walking tour through the Vigeland park. Emphasis will be made on seeing the sculptures in context, to see his target of describing the aspects of life from birth to death. His emotional life was not easy, and this is reflected in his sculptures. The park was established in 1919 and to a large extent completed when vigilant died in 1943, but the final sculpture group came up as late as 1985.
You may have an even better understanding of his art if the tour extends to the Vigeland Museum located just outside the park. Here you may see his early, more poetic work, his extremely realistic portrait busts and get a grasp on how the huge sculptures in the park were made. Entrance fee is not included. This year we celebrate that it is 150 years since Vigeland was borne.
