The Bygdøy peninsula is home to many of the best museums in the Oslo. Here you will gain a deeper understanding of Norwegian culture and heritage. You will learn stories and secrets from the past, about old traditions and brave new world explorers.
We will take a public bus from the city centre to the Norwegian Folk Museum. The museum is an outdoor collection of houses and items from different eras and regions of Norway. The perfect place to start if you want to understand Norway. Here you will also find the Gol Stave Church dating back to the year 1200.
From the Norwegian Folk Museum, we will take a short walk to the Viking Ship Museum. Here you will see the ships of the gruesome conquerors who have inspired the popular drama series 'Vikings'.
At the Viking Ship Museum, you will see three authentic Viking Ships. The oldest dates back to 820 AD. You will learn about the items, tools and artefacts in the museum, and the story they tell us of everyday life in the Viking era. Afterwards, perhaps you will look at the Vikings in a different light?
After getting to know the Vikings, we will walk down to the Polar Ship Museum Fram, which is all about polar exploration. The museum has its name after the vessel Fram (in Norwegian 'Forward'), which perhaps is the most durable wooden vessel in the world. 'Fram' was used for three important expeditions – and you will learn all about them while we are here.
After the Fram museum, we will take the public boat back to the city centre, which is the perfect way to end a day full of stories and new impressions.
